Thoughts On Thursday:
What are your thoughts on college education? Is it really worth all the money, time, and effort?
The debate over whether a college education is worth it initially started when the colonists arrived from Europe and founded “New College”, present day Harvard University in 1636. Yes, college education is worth it for a number of reasons studies have shown. College graduates make more money. On average, a college graduate with a bachelor’s degree earned $30,000 more per year than a high school graduate, or about $500,000 more over a lifetime. Furthermore, most professional jobs require college degrees. Most employers feel that a college education makes an individual well-rounded and balanced about the skills that pair up with the profession.
Also, a college education opens a wide variety of employment opportunities. With a college education, graduates often are likely to receive on the job training, and a new found ability to enhance skills compared to high school graduates. College graduates are more likely to have health insurance and retirement plans. Young adults are able to learn interpersonal skills in college. Students have the opportunity to interact with other students and faculty, to join student organizations and clubs, and to take part in various discussions and debates furthering the ability to build a network for themselves.
College graduates are more productive as members of society. By attending a college and/or university, a student can volunteer for many organizations. More often than not, they continue volunteering in their later life if they start as college students. Lastly, learning is always worthwhile and a vital part of making an individual well rounded. College teaches students to develop an ability to respond intelligently. To employers, a college education is a sign that there is a commitment. An individual spends four years in a place where they were forced to consider new ideas, to meet new people, to ask new questions, and to learn to think, to imagine, and to socialize with other human beings.
